Most facilities ban intact dogs after six months. We don't — we're one of the only shops in Utah (and arguably the country) with real protocols for safely boarding intact males and females.
Most facilities turn intact dogs away after six months because they're not equipped to safely separate them from other dogs. We built our protocols around this.
Intact females 6+ months are completely segregated from other dogs in public group settings. They get individual yard time, tons of human interaction, and if they have siblings also staying, they can be grouped with them. Never co-mingled with the general population.
Intact males 6+ months are evaluated individually. They start as a higher-risk assessment, but as our team gets to know the dog, we can start introducing group play if things go well. Honestly, it's usually not the intact dog that causes problems — it's a dominant altered dog that senses them as a risk and reacts.
The $10/day surcharge applies regardless of vet recommendations on when to spay or neuter. Many vets now recommend waiting until 12-18 months, which we understand, but the charge still applies during that window.
Book like any other reservation — just note that your dog is intact. We'll handle the protocol on our end so there's nothing extra you need to do.
We're a training-based facility. We take all breeds, all temperaments, all situations. The industry pattern of banning intact dogs always felt like an abdication to us — the responsible answer is to have real protocols, not to refuse the business. We'd rather be the shop that handles the hard cases properly than one of the dozen that only takes the easy ones.
Call your nearest Rocky Mountain K9 and mention intact dog boarding. We'll handle it from there.
